  • Local dentist to take stand against sweets this Halloween, help troops along the way
    Posted 2009-10-08

A Draper dentist is redefining the phrase “put your money where your mouth is.” This Halloween, trick-or-treaters can bring their excess candy to Draper Smiles receive $1 per pound. Dr. Fernando Pessoa is leading this anti-decay movement by giving away dollars and electric glowing toothbrushes in exchange for cavity-provoking candy. The candy will then be shipped to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan along with postcards from the participating children. “No child truly needs pounds of candy in their home,” Dr. Pessoa said. “But instead of being the Halloween Grinch and taking their candy away, we would like to offer the kids an incentive to do so by adding some dollars to their piggy banks. More importantly, these children have a chance to brighten the spirits of many of our troops across the world.” Global sugar consumption for kids increases by about 2 percent annually and currently sits at 50 million tons per year. This means parents need to be sure their kids teeth are being cared for more than ever. Candy, as well as hurting children’s teeth, can lead to hyperactivity and weight gain. In some cases, the wrong types of candy can also lead to broken teeth and damaged braces. Candy will be collected at Draper Smiles on Nov. 2, the Monday after Halloween, from 3:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The candy must be unopened. It will then be shipped to troops overseas. Dr. Fernando Pessoa is the dentist at Draper Smiles, which emphasizes in general family dental care as well as cosmetic and implant procedures. Dr. Pessoa is available to provide more information at 801-571-6541, or visit Draper Smiles at 949 E 12400 S #A2, Draper, Utah, 84020.
